It isn't just the gas mixture or the risk of explosion or fire that you mentioned. If you read the article you linked carefully, you will note that there are also problems with the gasket and plastic pieces inside the valve wearing with time, and with the fact that the threads on the canister are not fully formed (due to them being rolled rather than cut). The canisters are made for one- time use and intended to be disposable (they can be recycled in many localities, though you may have to separate the steel and aluminum ones, as we do here in Palo Alto and most other parts of California). To quote some points from the article in the engineering considerations section: if you refill with straight propane the canister will be under a significantly higher pressure, and this may well take the canister coose to its safety limit on a hot day. I think this is far too dangerous to even consider. The thread on the screw- thread type of canister is not fully formed. This means it is not as strong as one might hope. The Lindal valve construction looks pretty good, but is specified for one filling only. I imagine it too has a safety factor, but it doesn't have infinite life. The safety of the whole thing depends on the O- ring seal between the stove and the surface of the Lindal valve. I have noticed that these Lindal valves, while apparently 'tin- plated', do develop corrosion after a while. Buy Brunton F-FUELTOOL Lighter Filling Adapter for Butane Canisters at. Screw it on to any thread-mount butane fuel canister to fill butane.Too much of this and you may well find the O- ring no longer seals perfectly. The hazard is obvious, and increases with time. This risk is serious: the canister has been designed for a finite life (unlike the solid brass LPG fittings). I agree with the author that you should NOT fool around with refilling backpacking stove canisters. Propane stove cylinders are in many cases designed to be refilled (but not all are, only the ones labeled as such). Even then, the gaskets need to be replaced periodically. The authors on the Zen Stoves site also make strong recommendations against inexperienced people attempting to refill canisters, even with something like the Brunton tool. One thing I have observed personally with the Camping Gaz canisters that have an unthreaded valve that is similar to the threaded ones is that with repeated removal and replacement, the gasket inside the valve wears sufficiently to occasionally develop leaks. I would expect repeated refillings of both the threaded and unthreaded canisters to develop slow leaks after a while. The fact that you have to ask about it, and the questions you ask, indicate to me that you do not have the training or experience to understand and control the risks involved with assembling and using a refill system. To point out one statement you made that displays a lack of knowledge about canisters, the Lindal valve is, generically, the type of valve in the connector in the canister (and many spray cans). It is NOT a refill valve. It is NOT designed to be replaced in the canisters (they are always press- fit in place). The refill tool you referred to: Enlarged image of the refueling attachment.
